Steely Dan — co-founded by Donald Fagan and the late Walter Becker — finally got into the hall despite being a staple of classic rock with songs like “Reelin’ in the Years,” “Do It Again” and “Hey Nineteen.” They went into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.

R.E.M. — the inducted members are Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Michael Stipe — are behind such alt-rock hits as “Losing My Religion,” “Everybody Hurts” and “It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine).” And Nashville hitmaker Lindsey helped write “Girl Crush” for Little Big Town and "Jesus, Take the Wheel" for Carrie Underwood.

The class of 2024 also includes Pitchford, who helped Kenny Loggins with the megahit “Footloose” and also co-wrote “Fame” and “Holding Out For a Hero,” and producer-writer Timbaland, the mastermind behind Justin Timberlake’s “SexyBack” and Missy Elliot’s “Get Yer Freak On.”

On the ballot but unlucky this year were Public Enemy, Bryan Adams, George Clinton, Tracy Chapman, Blondie, Heart, The Doobie Brothers and David Gates.

Eligible voting members turned in ballots with their choices of three nominees from the songwriter category and three from the performing songwriter category. The induction ceremony will be held on June 13 in New York City.

Last year's inductees included Snoop Dogg, Gloria Estefan, Sade, Jeff Lynne, Glen Ballard and Teddy Riley. Some of those already in the hall include Carole King, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Brian Wilson, James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame was established in 1969 to honor those creating popular music. A songwriter with a notable catalog of songs qualifies for induction 20 years after the first commercial release of a song.

'Hip Hop Til Infinity' honors 50 years of hip hop with Hollywood immersive exhibit https://ktla.com/morning-news/hip-hop-til-infinity-honors-50-years-of-hip-hop-with-hollywood-immersive-exhibit/ Wed, 17 Jan 2024 21:01:16 +0000 https://ktla.com/?p=2799836

A new immersive exhibit in Hollywood is paying homage to hip hop, a genre that defied expectations and hasn't stopped for five decades.

New York-based media and content company, Mass Appeal, created "Hip Hop Til Infinity," which takes a look back at the 50 years of hip hop music.

The experience comes to the West Coast after spending some time in New York.

"This whole concept was birthed out of Mass Appeal's Hip Hop 50 celebration and we just wanted to bring it here to Los Angeles to celebrate hip hop and its impact around the world. Also the West Coast impact around the world as well," Mass Appeal designer Mark Bijasa explained to KTLA 5's Jasmine Simpkins.

Visitors will get a firsthand look at the birth of hip hop, which began with a pair of turntables in the Bronx, New York to what it is today.

Long Beach native Snoop Dogg is one of the curators of the exhibit.

There's an entire room dedicated to the rap legend, which includes his famous lowrider bicycle, the dog house featured on the cover of his debut album "Doggystyle" and more memorabilia.

The Hollywood location also honors the West Coast with collectibles from Death Row Records and Nipsey Hussle.

It's located at 6400 Sunset Boulevard and is currently open now until March. Tickets start at $29.75.

On weekdays it's open from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. On weekends it's open from 12:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Visitors have one hour to enjoy the entire experience.

Dana Carvey returns to podcast after son's death: 'I’m kind of on the pain train' https://ktla.com/entertainment/dana-carvey-returns-to-podcast-after-sons-death-im-kind-of-on-the-pain-train-2/ Wed, 17 Jan 2024 18:52:49 +0000 https://ktla.com/news/nationworld/dana-carvey-returns-to-podcast-after-sons-death-im-kind-of-on-the-pain-train-2/ Dana Carvey returned to co-host the latest episode of his “Fly on the Wall” podcast with David Spade more than two months after taking a hiatus in the wake of his son Dex’s passing.

“If you’re listening to our podcast right now, you probably know about my family’s loss,” Carvey told listeners at the top of the show. “And I just want to say that the amount of outpouring — online and emailing and people I still haven’t been able to call back — is incredible.”

Carvey’s son Dex, 32, died of an accidental drug overdose in mid-November, Carvey and his wife Paula had previously announced. A few days later, Carvey confirmed he would be taking a break from acting and social media in the wake of the family’s tragedy.

“[We are] trying to figure out what life looks like now that we are a family of three,” he wrote in a post shared to X (formerly Twitter). “We will heal the best we can and carry on. Our darling Dex would have wanted it that way.”

Carvey also took a break from recording his “Fly on the Wall” podcast with fellow “SNL” alum David Spade. The show has since released pre-recorded episodes, featuring both Carvey and Spade interviewing different celebrity guests.

The newest "Fly on the Wall" episode purposely featured no guests, allowing the hosts to “catch up,” Spade noted.

Carvey, in the first few minutes of the show, said he decided to come back to the podcast after thinking it over during the holidays.

“It’s a long day when you’re not working and you get in your head, and I think it’s going to be a great break. And I think it’s really cool to laugh,” he said.

He also said he and his family have been hiking and attending church, among other activities, while on their “private journey” together.

“Doing this, and riffing with you, I think is going to be very healthy for me, as I recover,” he told Spade. “Because I’m kind of on the pain train, with about millions of other people on this planet. And you don’t know how long you’re going to be on it, or when it’ll stop, or when it’ll get better.”

Spade added that Chris Farley’s mother — who had previously appeared on their show — had even written a letter to give to Carvey in the wake of Dex’s passing.

“It’s very sweet,” Carvey said of all the support he’s been offered. Ultimately, however, he said there was little anyone could do to ease his pain.

The duo eventually segued into current events, including the recent controversy surrounding Jo Koy’s jokes at the Golden Globes and this past weekend’s freezing NFL games.

They ended by teasing their upcoming season of “Fly on the Wall” as well as a brand new spinoff podcast, “Superfly,” scheduled to debut in early February.

“We have a lot of good people coming up," Spade said. "And we hope you tune in."

She's now leaning into that narrative for a project she's never quite done before.

Her upcoming album "This is Me... Now" will be accompanied by a full film titled "This Is Me... Now: A Love Story."

The Amazon Original is an action-packed adventure that ties to JLo's life story and journey to find love.

Prime Video

On Wednesday morning, she released the trailer for the movie through her newsletter, On the JLo.

"I have not been this nervous, excited, scared and thrilled to share something with you in years," she wrote.

The trailer starts with the "I'm Real" singer on the back of a jet ski, her hair blowing in the wind.

"I know what they say about me. About hopeless romantics. That we're weak but I'm not weak," she narrates acknowledging the years of talk about her love life.

From there scenes of love, loss and redemption take over the screen with text that reads: "From the heart, soul and dreams of Jennifer Lopez."

Prime Video

The film has quite the star-studded cast.

It stars Ben Affleck, Fat Joe, Trevor Noah, Kim Petras, Post Malone, Keke Palmer, Sofia Vergara, Jenifer Lewis, Jay Shetty, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Sadhguru and Derek Hough.

Dave Meyers serves as the movie's director. He's known for Ariana Grande's "No Tears Left to Cry" and Harry Styles' "Adore You."

In the trailer, both Lopez and her on-screen friends confront her yearning for love.

At one point, her friends form a sort of intervention accusing her of being a sex addict.

"What!?" Lopez says agast.

Later on, the trailer shows Lopez in a group therapy session.

The main topic is matters of the heart.

Prime Video

"Jennifer has created a narrative-driven cinematic odyssey, steeped in mythological storytelling and personal healing," the description on YouTube reads. "Dropping in tandem with her first studio album in a decade, this genre-bending Amazon original showcases her journey to love through her own eyes. With fantastical costumes, breathtaking choreography, and star-studded cameos, this panorama is an introspective retrospective of Jennifer’s resilient heart."

Just last week, Lopez released the album's first single "Can't Get Enough," which pokes fun at her many marriages. Hough plays one of her grooms.

The album "This is Me... Now" drops on Feb. 16 wherever you get your music.

The film, "This Is Me... Now: A Love Story" streams on Prime Video on Feb. 16 as well.

Hulk Hogan, friend pull teen from flipped car https://ktla.com/entertainment/hulk-hogan-friend-pull-teen-from-flipped-car-in-tampa/ Tue, 16 Jan 2024 22:00:04 +0000 https://ktla.com/news/nationworld/hulk-hogan-friend-pull-teen-from-flipped-car-in-tampa/ Wrestling legend Hulk Hogan and a friend came to a teenage girl's rescue after she flipped her car on the Veterans Expressway in Tampa, Florida.

Photos published by TMZ showed the retired wrestler and his friend approach a flipped car on the highway, right in the area of Exit 2A in Clearwater.

According to Hogan's wife, Sky Daily, the couple and friend saw the accident happen while on the way home.

"Last night, after we left dinner in Tampa, we saw a car flip in front of us!" Daily wrote on Facebook. "I truly admire my husband @hulkhogan and our good buddy @jakerask for springing into action, puncturing the [girl's] airbag, and getting her quickly out of the car. By all appearances, she was unscathed, just really rattled, which is an absolute miracle!"

Hogan himself said the teenager had some divine intervention on her part, thanks to the tool he used to deflate the airbags.

"The crazy part about the teenager that flipped her car was that without a knife to puncture the airbags to get her out, an Indian Rocks Christian ballpoint pen came in really handy to [pop] the bags, thank you God, all is well even now, Amen HH," the Clearwater retiree wrote on X.

According to the Associated Press, the Tampa Police Department reported minor injuries in the incident. Nexstar's WFLA has also reached out for independent comment.

Fans, friends remember 'Seinfeld' actor Peter Crombie: 'Unlike any sitcom guest star' https://ktla.com/entertainment/fans-friends-remember-seinfeld-actor-peter-crombie-unlike-any-sitcom-guest-star/ Tue, 16 Jan 2024 17:13:48 +0000 https://ktla.com/?p=2797058 (NEXSTAR) – Fans of Peter Crombie, well known for his recurring role on “Seinfeld,” are paying tribute to the actor after his ex-wife announced his passing last week.

Crombie, 71, had worked in the television and film industry for decades, appearing in TV series such as “Perfect Strangers,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and “Law & Order, as well as several Oliver Stone films including “Born on the Fourth of July” and “The Doors.” But fans of “Seinfeld” will likely know him best as the actor who portrayed “Crazy” Joe Davola, an intimidating and unhinged acquaintance (and later foe) of Jerry’s.

Seinfeld Peter Crombie

Crombie’s ex-wife, Nadine Kijner, announced his passing in an Instagram post shared Wednesday.

“It is with shock and extreme sadness that I share my ex-husband died this morning,” she wrote, in a post that included pictures of herself and Crombie on their wedding day. “Thank you for so many wonderful memories and being such a good man.”

She also called him a “kind, giving, caring and creative soul.”

Judging by Kijner's description, Crombie's character on "Seinfeld" bore little resemblance to the actor himself. "Crazy" Joe Davola — as he was known to Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer — had stalked Elaine, kicked Kramer in the head, and attempted to attack Jerry during the filming of his TV pilot.

“From the moment we met him, we knew he was unlike any sitcom guest star we had ever seen,” wrote the podcasters behind the “Seinfeld”-focused “This Podcast Is Making Me Thirsty,” on X. “His portrayal as ‘Crazy’ Joe Davola in Seinfeld is one of the most memorable of the entire series.

“He portrayed my absolute favorite Seinfeld character, Crazy Joe Davola,” one “Seinfeld” enthusiast wrote. “I think I quote something from his episodes at least once a week."

Another called him “one of the greatest side characters from the show for sure.”

Comedian Lewis Black, a friend of Crombie’s, also reacted to news of his passing on X.

“Am heartbroken by the death of my good friend Peter Crombie,” Black wrote. “He was a gifted artist. Not only was he a wonderful actor but an immensely talented writer. More importantly he was as sweet as he was intelligent and I am a better person for knowing him.”

Jay Huguley, an actor who worked with Crombie on “Walker, Texas Ranger,” also remembered befriending Crombie during a break in filming.

“I spent two weeks in Dallas with Peter on Walker Texas Ranger — we had a lot of days off so spent quite a bit of time together eating and drinking and going to museums,” Huguley wrote under Kijner’s post. “He was such a lovely guy. My heartfelt condolences to all his loved ones.”

Kijner told TMZ and People that Crombie died of a brief illness (and specified to the latter that it was a "fast intestinal illness"), but did not elaborate on his cause of death.

'Succession' dominates drama Emmys, 'The Bear' claims comedy and Quinta Brunson makes history https://ktla.com/entertainment/succession-dominates-drama-emmys-the-bear-claims-comedy-and-quinta-brunson-makes-history/ Tue, 16 Jan 2024 04:41:54 +0000 https://ktla.com/?p=2796266 “Succession” won best drama series, “The Bear” won best comedy, and both dominated the acting awards at Monday night's Emmys, while Quinta Brunson scored an emotional and historic win for “Abbott Elementary."

“Succession,” the HBO saga of a squabbling wealthy family and maladjusted media empire, won its third best Drama Series prize for its fourth and final season, along with a Best Actor in a Drama award for Kieran Culkin and Best Actress in a Drama for Sarah Snook.

“The Bear,” the FX dramedy about another contentious family and a struggling restaurant at the center of the life of a talented chef, won Best Comedy Series for its first season. The Emmys also heaped honors on its acting cast, naming Jeremy Allen White as Best Actor in a Comedy, Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for Ayo Edebiri and Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy for Ebon-Moss Bachrach. All three were first-time nominees.

“This is a show about family and found family and real family,” Edebiri said from the stage as she accepted the first trophy of the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Brunson won Best Actress in a Comedy at the Emmy Awards for the show she created, “Abbott Elementary," becoming the first Black woman to win the award in more than 40 years and the first from a network show to win it in more than a decade.

“I love making ‘Abbott Elementary’ so much and I am so happy to be able to live my dream and act out comedy,” Brunson said during her acceptance on the Fox telecast, fighting back tears. The writer-actor was among the stars with standout looks on the Emmys' silver carpet.

“Succession" won six Emmys overall including Best Supporting Actor for Matthew Macfadyen.

“Beef” won Best Limited Series, while Steven Yeun and Ali Wong became the first Asian Americans to win in their categories – Yeun for Best Actor in a Limited Series and Wong for Best Actress. Creator Lee Sung won Emmys for writing and directing. It had eight Emmys overall after three wins at last weekend's Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

Brunson had won a writing Emmy for “Abbott Elementary,” her mockumentary about a predominantly Black and chronically underfunded grade school in Philadelphia, but this is her first for acting. Isabel Sanford of “The Jeffersons” was the only previous Black woman to win the category in 1981.

The first hour of the show held on Martin Luther King Jr. Day saw three Black women win major awards: Brunson, Edebiri and Niecy Nash-Betts, who won Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story."

On the Netflix show, Nash-Betts played a neighbor of the serial killer whose complaints to authorities about his behavior go unheeded.

"I accept this award on behalf of every Black and brown woman who has gone unheard and over-policed," she said.

The show was held on holiday because of a four-month delay over Hollywood’s writers' and actors strikes.

“Everybody having fun at the chocolate Emmys tonight?” host Anthony Anderson said during the show. “We are killing it tonight! ... This is like MLK Day and Juneteenth all rolled up in one!”

Anderson, who was nominated for Lead Actor in a Comedy seven times without a win for his show “black-ish,” added, "If I was nominated this year, hell, I definitely would have won!”

The tweaked awards calendar made for some oddities. Edebiri and White won their Emmy for the show’s first season eight days after winning Golden Globes for the second season.

Backstage, a staffer working the Emmys approached White as he was scrolled through congratulatory texts on his phone while waiting to speak in the press room. “I’m a cook myself so this means a lot to me,” he told White before grabbing a selfie with the star.

Culkin outshined the older brother and the father to win the final lead actor Emmy for “Succession.”

Culkin had twice been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for “Succession” without a win. But in the final season, in which his character Roman Roy goes from sideline wisecracker to emotional disaster at the center of the show’s drama, he was put in the lead category and won over castmates Brian Cox, who played his father, and Jeremy Strong, who played his older brother.

Culkin got big laughs during his speech when he told his wife that their two kids weren't enough.

“I want more," Culkin said. "You said if I won, we could talk about it."

Snook took her first Emmy in three nominations for “Succession" and her fictional husband Macfadyen won the second Emmy of his career for playing Tom Wambsgans, the son-in-law that began the HBO series as a hanger-on and ended it as the closest thing it had to a victor on “Succession."

Jennifer Coolidge, the only cast member among the cursed vacationers of HBO’s “The White Lotus” to return for season two, won her second Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama.

Coolidge and her character Tanya gained an even greater cult following for the second season’s Italian storyline as she did for its Hawaiian first. The role was nearly a lead this time, but all of the “White Lotus” cast members were nominated in supporting categories, including five of them in Coolidge’s category.

Emotions ran high from the start of the ceremony with the first presenter, Christina Applegate, who said in 2021 that she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, got a standing ovation as she came out using a cane to present the award, and was tearful as she announced the winners.

“The Bear” also won awards for comedy directing and writing, and along with the four it had won at the Creative Arts Emmys, had taken nine overall.

Anderson told the nominees at the beginning of the night that instead of having their speeches cut off by music, his mother, actor Doris Hancox, sitting in the audience, would tell them when it was time to move on. But she more often shouted down her son in the running gag.

“I'm the host!” he yelled back at her at one point.

Honoring TV history was the theme at the 75th Emmys. Anderson opened the show on a “Mr. Rogers” set and performed TV theme songs including “Good Times,” and several cast reunions were spread throughout the show.

Cast members including Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell from “Martin," Ted Danson and Rhea Perlman from “Cheers,” and Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers from “All in The Family,” performed short bits from recreations of their sitcom sets before presenting awards.

Arsenio Hall appeared on a rendition of his 1990s talk show set, while Tina Fey and Amy Poehler reunited to present an award in the form of “Weekend Update,” which they teamed up for on “Saturday Night Live” from 2001 to 2005.

“We’ve reached the stage in life where we’ll only present awards sitting down,” Fey said.

One notable appearance came from Katherine Heigl, who joined Ellen Pompeo and other former “Grey's Anatomy” cast mates on a hospital room set after leaving the show, now about to start its 20th season, on not the best terms in 2010.

Elton John wins Emmy for live special at Dodger Stadium; joins EGOT club https://ktla.com/entertainment/elton-john-wins-emmy-for-live-special-at-dodger-stadium-joins-egot-club/ Tue, 16 Jan 2024 03:30:30 +0000 https://ktla.com/?p=2796174 Legendary performer Elton John has joined one of the most illustrious and exclusive clubs in all of entertainment after winning an Emmy for his live special at Dodger Stadium.

During Monday night's awards show, the singer-songwriter won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special for "Elton John: Farewell From Dodger Stadium."

By winning the Emmy, Elton John, 76, becomes a member of an esteemed club that few in the entertainment world can even dream of joining.

He's now won an all four of the major American art awards, Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award — aka, the EGOT. He's only the 19th person to achieve EGOT status among competitive awards. He also joins as the club's second-oldest member.

He was not in attendance to accept the award due to a recent knee operation, he said in a post on Instagram, but he said he was on "cloud nine" to receive the honor.

"Thank you to all the fans, friends, and collaborators who have supported me throughout the years," his post reads. "Honoured to have joined the hallowed ranks of EGOT winners, here’s to the joy of music and the magic it brings to our lives!"

He also thanked his tour band, the show's multiple special guests, the production team and the entire crew that made his final tour possible.

"Elton John: Farewell From Dodger Stadium" was a live event that took place in November 2022 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

The concert was broadcast to homes across the world through Disney+. It marked the legendary musician's official farewell to live performances as the last stop on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour.

The English piano wizard's 1975 concert at Dodger Stadium, at the peak of his fame, is considered by many to be among the greatest rock performances of all time.

Christina Applegate receives standing ovation at 2024 Emmys https://ktla.com/entertainment/christina-applegate-receives-standing-ovation-at-2024-emmys/ Tue, 16 Jan 2024 02:07:29 +0000 https://ktla.com/?p=2796025 Actress Christina Applegate surprised the crowd at the 75th Annual Emmy Awards by presenting the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

The "Married... with Children" alum walked out onto the stage to the iconic theme song and the audience immediately rose to their feet.

Applegate was overcome with emotion by the standing ovation.

Her appearance comes over three years after announcing she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis while filming the final season of the Netflix comedy "Dead to Me."

Teary-eyed, she lightened the mood by making a joke.

“Thank you so much,” she said. “Oh my God, you’re totally shaming me with disability by standing up. It’s fine. Body not by Ozempic.”

The jokes continued from the "Samantha Who?" actress when the audience clapped after every sentence she read.

“We don’t have to applaud every time I do something," she quipped.

She then joked about her escort onstage saying, “I actually don’t need him here; he’s just really cute.”

After announcing the nominees, she proudly read Ayo Edebiri of "The Bear" as the winner.

"Ayo, get your a-- up here," she said proudly.

Applegate has been very public about her MS journey and even said she may not be working "on-camera again," according to an interview last year with Vanity Fair.

She further discussed her struggles with the diagnosis with the Los Angeles Times.

“Right now, I couldn’t imagine getting up at 5 a.m. and spending 12 to 14 hours on a set; I don’t have that in me at this moment," she said.

Applegate said she planned on doing more voiceover work "to make some cash to make sure that my daughter’s fed and we’re homed.”

During the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards, she revealed that it was probably her final red carpet appearance.

PHOTOS: Celebrities light up Emmy Awards silver carpet https://ktla.com/entertainment/photos-celebrities-light-up-emmy-awards-silver-carpet/ Tue, 16 Jan 2024 01:39:21 +0000 https://ktla.com/news/nationworld/photos-celebrities-light-up-emmy-awards-silver-carpet/ NEW YORK (AP) — Television's finest brought the silver carpet alive in color, vying with a sea of black, on Monday at the strike-delayed 75th Emmy Awards, including a 3D-molded black look for Ayo Edebiri and sparkly chartreuse for Rhea Seehorn.

Edebiri of “The Bear” walked in a strapless custom gown from Louis Vuitton. It was molded to her body and fell above the ankle. “We're snatched and loving it,” she told E!

Riley Keough also went for black as the classic color made the bright color pop at the 2023 Emmys.

Seehorn of “Better Call Saul” shone in sparkly sequins on her long-sleeve, high-neck gown by Naeem Khan. When it comes to her looks, she told The Associated Press, she's not about things “falling out.” Being able to use the restroom is another fashion requirement.

“I do love dress up,” she said.

Hollywood’s duel strikes last year delayed TV’s big night, unleashing high-volume fashion energy this awards season. There were metallics, floral patterns and, yes, trains.

Dominique Fishback felt it in a pale blue halter ballgown with a wide train. Joy Sunday felt it in an optimistic optic white off-shoulder trouser look with two long pieces trailing behind her. So did Tom Colicchio in a red velvet jacket.

Cristo Fernández split the color difference in two tones: a brown jacket with black accents and trousers.

Janelle James of "Abbott Elementary was among the stars who chose red.

“It's Rodarte. I just learned how to say that,” James laughed. Her jewels, including a pear-drop pendant, were Fred Leighton.

Sarah Snook was also in red by Vivienne Westwood. Her skinny straps were slightly off the shoulder and the skirt of her gown was full and pleated.

Issa Rae’s feathers on a creamy embellished dress fluttered on the carpet. Her winged look was by Pamella Roland.

“We have a pearl moment. We have a bit of sequins. Just bedazzled. I felt like I wanted to give a little drama, you know,” she said.

Hannah Waddingham, who rarely disappoints on a red carpet, was true to her fashion self in a plunging neckline body skimmer with all-over sparkle. It was custom Marchesa. Quinta Brunson, another fashion standout, wore dainty pink with a little belted accent from Dior couture. It was a bit Old Hollywood and a bit Betty Boop.

Ali Wong wore Louis Vuitton with a silver top and patterned blue bottom. The chunky embellishment on both caught the lights on the carpet.

“It fit so well. I just loved it the minute I put it on," she said. Her Chopard jewels included a shopping pair of chandelier earrings. On her feet were high black platform sandals. She was nursing an injury so the heels were left at home.

Colman Domingo wore custom Louis Vuitton in black, two pearl bracelets on one wrist and a broach on one lapel.

'The Honeymooners' actress Joyce Randolph, who played Trixie Norton, has died at 99 https://ktla.com/news/nationworld/ap-honeymooners-actress-joyce-randolph-has-died-at-99-played-ed-nortons-wife-trixie/ Mon, 15 Jan 2024 03:03:41 +0000 (AP) — Joyce Randolph, a veteran stage and television actor whose role as the savvy Trixie Norton on “The Honeymooners” provided the perfect foil to her dimwitted TV husband, has died. She was 99.

Randolph died of natural causes Saturday night at her home on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, her son Randolph Charles told The Associated Press Sunday.

She was the last surviving main character of the beloved comedy from television’s golden age of the 1950s.

“The Honeymooners” was an affectionate look at Brooklyn tenement life, based in part on star Jackie Gleason’s childhood. Gleason played the blustering bus driver Ralph Kramden. Audrey Meadows was his wisecracking, strong-willed wife Alice, and Art Carney the cheerful sewer worker Ed Norton. Alice and Trixie often found themselves commiserating over their husbands’ various follies and mishaps, whether unknowingly marketing dogfood as a popular snack or trying in vain to resist a rent hike, or freezing in the winter as their heat is shut off.

Randolph would later cite a handful of favorite episodes, including one in which Ed is sleepwalking.

“And Carney calls out, ‘Thelma?!’ He never knew his wife’s real name,” she later told the Television Academy Foundation.

Originating in 1950 as a recurring skit on Gleason’s variety show, “Cavalcade of Stars,” “The Honeymooners” still ranks among the all-time favorites of television comedy. The show grew in popularity after Gleason switched networks with “The Jackie Gleason Show.” Later, for one season in 1955-56, it became a full-fledged series.

Those 39 episodes became a staple of syndicated programming aired all over the country and beyond.

In an interview with The New York Times in January 2007, Randolph said she received no compensation in residuals for those 39 episodes. She said she finally began getting royalties with the discovery of “lost” episodes from the variety hours.

After five years as a member of Gleason’s on-the-air repertory company, Randolph virtually retired, opting to focus full-time on marriage and motherhood.

“I didn’t miss a thing by not working all the time,” she said. “I didn’t want a nanny raising (my) wonderful son.”

But decades after leaving the show, Randolph still had many admirers and received dozens of letters a week. She was a regular into her 80s at the downstairs bar at Sardi’s, where she liked to sip her favorite White Cadillac concoction — Dewar’s and milk — and chat with patrons who recognized her from a portrait of the sitcom’s four characters over the bar.

Randolph said the show’s impact on television viewers didn’t dawn on her until the early 1980s.

“One year while (my son) was in college at Yale, he came home and said, ’Did you know that guys and girls come up to me and ask, ‘Is your mom really Trixie?’” she told The San Antonio Express in 2000. “I guess he hadn’t paid much attention before then.”

Earlier, she had lamented that playing Trixie limited her career.

“For years after that role, directors would say: ‘No, we can’t use her. She’s too well-known as Trixie,’” Randolph told the Orlando Sentinel in 1993.

Gleason died in 1987 at age 71, followed by Meadows in 1996 and Carney in 2003. Gleason had revived “The Honeymooners” in the 1960s, with Jane Kean as Trixie.

Randolph was born Joyce Sirola in Detroit in 1924, and was around 19 when she joined a road company of “Stage Door.” From there she went to New York and performed in a number of Broadway shows.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, she was seen often on TV, appearing with such stars as Eddie Cantor, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, Danny Thomas and Fred Allen.

Randolph met Gleason for the first time when she did a Clorets commercial on “Cavalcade of Stars,” and The Great One took a liking to her; she didn’t even have an agent at the time.

Randolph spent her retirement going to Broadway openings and fundraisers, being active with the U.S.O. and visiting other favorite Manhattan haunts, among them Angus, Chez Josephine and the Lambs Club.

Her husband, Richard Lincoln, a wealthy marketing executive who died in 1997, served as president at the Lambs, a theatrical club, and she reigned as “first lady.” They had one son, Charles.

'True Detective: Night Country' review: HBO crime series goes horror https://ktla.com/entertainment/true-detective-night-country-review-hbo-crime-series-goes-horror-2/ Sun, 14 Jan 2024 05:50:24 +0000 https://ktla.com/?p=2792437 (NEXSTAR) — It's been five years since HBO's critically acclaimed anthology series "True Detective" aired its last season but the wait is finally over as a new mystery begins. This time, the U.S.-set series takes itself way up north to Alaska for a head-scratcher of a crime that's sure to unsettle you.

"Night Country" stars Academy Award-winner Jodie Foster ("Nyad") as Det. Liz Danvers, a widowed chief of police who's reunited with former colleague, trooper Evangeline Navaroo (Kali Reis) when eight men who operate a local research station disappear, seemingly into thin air. Left behind on a whiteboard are the words: "We are all dead."

The disappearances happen in the dead of Alaskan winter when the fictional town of Ennis is shrouded in darkness all day and all night. Adding to the spookiness is Ennis itself. The town is haunted by very real specters: the unsolved murder of an indigenous woman, locals with unchecked mental illness, and a controversial mine that keeps the town afloat but poisons the water supply on the poor side of town.

The new six-episode installment is the brainchild of showrunner Issa López, who also serves as writer, director and executive producer. While the fourth season of the show bears all the markings of a "True Detective" season — a complex lead, secret backstories, religious symbolism — "Night Country" is decidedly more frightening than the previous three seasons.

As the mystery deepens, horrors become more real. And for some characters, the line between the living and the dead begins to blur.

Jodie Foster and Finn Bennett in "True Detective: Night Country" (Photograph by Michele K. Short/HBO)

Like its predecessors, "Night Country" gives its detectives more to struggle with than just a grisly case.

Danvers is very much the kind of character Jodie Foster should be playing and the Academy Award winner expertly delivers the aggressively-serious-but-also-deeply-broken performance you would expect. Viewers meet Danvers at a crossroads in her life: she's unable to move on from the loss of her family and failing at raising the stepdaughter her husband left behind. At work, she's fighting to lead the male peers who doubt her. Danvers' stepdaughter Leah (Isabella Star LaBlanc) resents her and much of the parental struggle focuses on the dynamic of a white agnostic raising a young indigenous woman trying to hold on to her culture. This battle is one of the most effective and fresh interpersonal throughlines of season 4.

Meanwhile, as Navarro, Reis (who's a professional boxer, in addition to actor), matches Foster's workplace toughness but adds a layer of fragility as it pertains to her family and her identity. Navarro is also indigenous and like many officers of color, she struggles with upholding systems she sees as harming her own people. Though Reis is still relatively green, her performance here shines, especially in scenes with Navarro's troubled sister, who Navarro is determined to save.

Kali Reis in "True Detective: Night Country" (Photograph by Michele K. Short/HBO)

Adding to Danvers' and Navarro's troubles? Each other. Though the two were once partners and friends, they haven't spoken in years due to a dark secret they share.

But the women aren't alone. They're also flanked by rookie officer Pete Prior (Finn Bennett) who's trying to make his mark at the police station without letting Danvers walk all over him. In Prior, "Night Country" finds some of the softness its two female leads often repress. Bennett plays the young father without any hints of toxic masculinity and it's refreshing that of the three lead investigators, Prior is the one seen holding babies, crying, and torn between trying to have a career and a family. It's a refreshing gender dynamic to see on an American crime series.

The six-episode run of "Night Country" flies by quickly and once we arrive at the big answers in the last two, it becomes clear how tightly showrunner/writer López and her fellow EPs (including Foster, series creator Nic Pizzolatto, and director Barry Jenkins) laced the season's themes into its mystery. Like any good solution, it's a logical end-point that still manages to surprise.

All-in-all, López and Co.'s take on a "True Detective" season appears to have shaken some life into a sometimes flailing series. While the first season, starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, received near-universal praise, the anthology hasn't flown that close to acclaim since. Though season two, starring Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams, isn't without its fans, it remains somewhat polarizing. The third season, which aired in 2017 and starred Mahershala Ali, was generally seen as an improvement, despite flying under the radar.

Based on early reviews, the strange turns taken by "Night Country" might be exactly what was needed for a season to individuate itself from the impact of the first. The season currently holds a 93% Tomatometer score across 70 critical reviews. "Night Country" isn't without some flaws — frustrating character beats, some less-interesting side plots — but it's ultimately a riveting watch, especially during the winter months.

"True Detective: Night Country" premieres Sunday, Jan. 14 on HBO and will be available to stream on Max. Score: ★★★★☆
